Plans for an 85-storey skyscraper near Sandton City will go ahead when local and global economic conditions improve according to Liberty Properties. Liberty Properties, the owners of the Sandton City complex in Johannesburg say that plans to build an 85-storey skyscraper are on track but the start date for the project has not yet been finalised. Mel Urdang, director of retail and business development at Liberty says that the building is part of a master plan for the expansion of Sandton City but the timing of the various phases of expansion would be influenced by the global and local economic climate. Steel roof crowns Sandton City extension

The futuristic steel roof structure has been completed at the new entrance court to the south east extension the Sandton City Shopping Centre. The super-regional shopping centre’s expansion and refurbishment project includes interior refurbishments and 30 000 m2 of new retail space. “Within nine months the development will be complete,” says Julie Hillary, Liberty Properties’ general manager for the Sandton region. The 40 metre diameter steel roof structure used 250 tonnes of steel.

Durban - The process of testing the market for a high-speed rail linking Durban and Johannesburg will start next month, Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele announced on Monday. “By next month, we will commence with the dual process of concept development and testing the market for a period of six months,” said Ndebele at the launch of transport month at Bridge City in Durban. The construction of a multibillion-rand high-speed rail link between Durban and Johannesburg would cut transport times dramatically. he National Department of Transport (DoT) said on Wednesday that it had completed a detailed investment programme of action for the South African rail network. DoT director-general George Mahlalela said at a work-in-progress briefing in Johannesburg that certain 'catalytic projects' had been identified within the programme. 'We are adopting an approach which suggests a sequenced delivery approach for the rail sector over a 20-year period.' The programme first identified three high-speed rail projects for possible development, namely Johannesburg to Durban, Johannesburg to Cape Town, and Johannesburg to Musina.
