In the spring of 1923, Jan Heijmans started his road building company in Rosmalen, the Netherlands. The post-war period of reconstruction gave him ample opportunity to expand his business through the repair and construction of roads and airfields. Road building activities became even more extensive following the takeover of construction company Koninklijke Van Drunen.
In September 1993 Heijmans acquired access to the capital market through the application for its shares to be listed on Euronext Amsterdam. In the nineties and early 2000's, Heijmans takes over several companies, through which further growth is established. Measured in terms of Dutch turnover, Heijmans occupies third place after BAM and Koninklijke Volker Wessels Stevin.
