Zlote Tarasy (Golden Terraces) is one of those commercial megastructures that are cropping up all over the world. More than 200.000 square meters of mixed-use development occupies a large multi-level plot in the very centre of the Polish capital. Its aggressive urban presence, chaotic-looking composition and dull grey cladding is mitigated by an extraordinary glass roof covering the heart of the valley. Its undulating shape was inspired by the idea of a piece of cloth stretched over a number of spheres. From the outside the roof is rather overwhelmed by the higher parts of the complex, but from the inside the roof imbues the characterless retail space with a sense of openness and exceptionality. Among the dense accumulation of signs, goods and interior architecture elements it boldly acts as a single huge window providing wide views towards the city's urban skyline and an illusion of open-air shopping.
