IN 2008 SPACE GROUP ARCHITECTS OF OSLO NORWAY, WON THE PRESTIGIOUS COMPETITION OF DESIGNING NEW OSLO CENTRAL STATION. THE STATION WILL BE BUILT BETWEEN 2012 AND 2017.

Todays chaotic situation resulting from decades of just behind time planning, displays a lack of cohesion or flexibility to absorb the evolution of the function or the city it is meant to serve.

Space Groups strategy is a natural and delayed architectural response to this.

The New Oslo Central Station axis neutralizes the old stigmatised division between east and west and reflects the real shift of public flows as the city expands east.

The north to south axis contains all station functions. The station becomes visible in the cityscape with a clear architectural identity and geometrical clarity and defines squares and entrances on all sides.

The traditional steel structures of european train stations with the large span arches, combining the challenge of constructing above the existing train tunnel – reinterpreted with a contemporary technology and a substructure that gives the necessary lightness and refinement of its expression.

Inside the station the orientation is easy without any changes of directions from the train and into the station area and further out in the city. The dynamic arches of steel guides the passengers both in the longitudinal direction and across the building – through a light and spectacular space with a unique view as a welcome to the city.

The green park on the roof of the Station Allé is influenced by New Yorks High Line. This area will be a good resting point and a great place to get your first view of the city overlooking the fjord, the Opera and the main street, Karl Johan.

This film is made by Babusjka, Norway.

The building is so tall anyway that sunlight doesn't really come in anyway (esp. not in the winter with the few sunlight they have in Oslo). Open up the building have its disadvantages here. It gives natural light in the summer, but with low temperatures in the winter open buildings with a lot of glass these buildings suck energy like noplace else in the world. Then a park on the roof have a big advantage.

Nice! Although this possibly a disadvantage for the light inside, as their are not much roof windows?

Yes, there will be a park covering the entire roof.
