The second building to be released in the Rhubarb Lane development on the old Cook St council depot site, Tattoo, features 21 loft-style spaces in a 7-storey design by the Warren & Mahoney architectural team. It’s planned for completion in 2012. The first 12 units, at No 1 Rhubarb Lane, sold out quickly after being released in April. They were designed by Sydney-based New Zealander Ian Moore - each of the first 6 buildings in the development, planned for the 2.9ha former depot site on the Auckland cbd’s western fringe, has been designed by a different architect. All the units are 2-storeyed and all are available as live/work spaces. The unusual façade of Tattoo will greet visitors as they enter the lane - a striking tattoo graphic imprinted on the louvres of the façade.
The 21 spaces inside will offer a variety of configurations suitable for commercial or residential use or a combination of both. Andrew Barclay, principal architect & executive director of Warren & Mahoney, said: “We love the idea that when the building’s louvres are closed it creates one unified, literal tattoo idea. However, the owners will be able to open these up as they choose, which is great because the façade will be changing day to day – always different from when you saw it last. “A building that is responsive to light, the time of day & privacy needs, such as Tattoo, is something that you can’t see on the streets of the likes of Paris or Rome.”
