Gateway Theatre of Shopping is the largest shopping centre in Africa, as well as the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. It is located on Umhlanga Ridge in Umhlanga, which is situated north of Durban. Construction commenced on 3 March 1998 and it officially opened in September 2001. It was modelled on the Mall of America and West Edmonton Mall centres, and was developed by Old Mutual Properties. It currently has a retail floor space area of 180,000 sq. metres, and hosts almost all of South Africa's major retail stores, as well as their international counterparts.
The mall currently sees more than 1.80 million visitors passing through its doors per month, and has parking space for approximately 10 000 cars. It also boasts over 350 stores, more than 70 restaurants, 18 movie theatres - making it one of the largest cinemas in the world - 6 Nouveau cinemas, a playhouse called the Barnyard Theatre, the Wave House, an arcade and theme park called Fantasy Forest, a 4000 sq. metre skate park designed by Tony Hawk, the highest indoor climbing rock in the world, a gym, the highest fountain in Africa, tenpin bowling, clubs, dodgem cars, Valet Parking, the Kizo Gallery, Palm Court, Adventure Golf, an MTN science centre, a Nissan 4x4 track and a science theme park.
Plans for further expansion are under-way. New Shops as well as and hotels on the premises have and are being developed.
