Auckland's health board will build a $15 million multi storey car park to ease congestion around Auckland hospital. Health Minister Tony Ryall gave his approval for the project today and ceremonially turned the first sod of the six floor building. Parking around Auckland City Hospital at Grafton has caused patients and visitors problems for years, Mr Ryall said. "Visitors using the current public car park have a confusing path to the hospital reception, following a blue line painted on the ground, across a road, through basement corridors to a lift which takes them to the fifth floor reception."
Auckland District Health Board Chairman Pat Snedden said: "We know that parking issues around the hospital have been a source of frustration." The carpark will be built by Mainzeal and it is expected to take at least 12 months to build, starting in November. The six floor building will be on the former Wallace Block site on the hospital precinct. A courtyard and seven ground floor retail outlets will front on to Park Road. Immediately above will be commercial space. Traffic will enter via the existing Park Road traffic lights and pedestrian entry to the new car park will be via a level walk through the Auckland City Hospital Galleria.
Mr Ryall said: "It's expected that more than 120 people will be employed on this job at various times during the construction, with another 80 plus people employed offsite involved in design, manufacturing and transport.
