The new Aviation Display Hall at MOTAT is a major new museum facility for some of the most historic aircraft in New Zealand. While some aircraft are currently in the outdoors, the new super-sized hangar facility will offer weather-controlled storage facilities for heritage aircraft, and will also offer an entirely new visitor experience. Studio Pacific and Freeman Ryan Design, exhibition designers from Sydney, Australia collaborated to provide MOTAT with an international museum-quality exhibition space at MOTAT.
The Display Hall provides exhibition space for MOTAT's collection of aircraft, some of which are the only examples of their type in the world. The new building is over 3000m2 and has ample height to accommodate the aircraft tails. It is sited on a closed landfill: effectively, on recycled land. From the outset with the initial design work in 2003, sustainable design measures have been an integral part of the overall design approach. The Display Hall is also an educational area, including specific reception areas for 100 students, provision for teaching spaces and specific provisions for other student needs.
The new Aviation Display Hall is composed of massive LVL (laminated veneered lumber) trusses that span 42m to safely encase the Solent and Sunderland flying boats, two of the many aircraft belonging to MOTAT. The building incorporates display areas between the legs of the LVL trusses, and will include an interactive visitor experience. Studio Pacific's design for the building is a modern interpretation of the hangar, utilising the unique capabilities of the LVL to span the equally great wingspan of the aircraft within.
