The re-development of Njoli Square was initiated by the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality (NMMM) in 2003 and has become one of its priority projects of its “2020 Vision.”
Njoli Square is a vibrant cross roads of Kwazekhele's two major roads, Daku and Njoli. It is currently a turning circle, two taxi ranks and a variety of small businesses that have developed mostly informally on the pavements.
THE RESPONSE:
Human, people friendly environments: The response intends to create a positive urban environment that enhances rather than replaces the energy of what is there at the moment. The response is sensitive to street edges and usable public space.
Iconic value: The development is on axis with the main approaches. Its iconic dome structure will be visible from a distance and create a centre to a currently centreless suburb.
Integrate with public transport initiatives: Njoli Square is on several major public transport routes. It also has the second largest transport exchange area in the city. This allows for a multitude of small business and civic opportunities.
It allows for a variety of business opportunities.
Create a place of civic importance: It has been the NMMM's intention from the start of this project that the development be people and civic driven rather than a commercial development. Consequently, funding will be made available from a variety of public and private institutions.
IMPLEMENTATION:
The project has now been allocated funding via the Neighbourhood Growth and Development Programme. Show houses have been built on vacant erven close to Njoli Square to facilitate the moving of families affected by the development.
