Work on the next stage of the New Lynn redevelopment is set to start in October after the Auckland Council reached settlements with businesses in Totara Ave. The council is planning a $35 million project to redevelop the area near the bus terminal. It will be carried out in partnership with Infratil and will include more than 7000 square metres of commercial floor space, a two-level medical centre and covered public parking. The council is providing $15.5 million in funding for the development which is expected to be completed late next year. Work on the project was originally planned to start in September but it couldn't go ahead until the council had reached agreements with three business owners who had outstanding leases. Council spokesman Glyn Walters confirms it has now settled with the affected tenants. "But all final settlements including their terms and conditions are confidential," Mr Walters says. Noel Callaghan is one of the affected lease holders who was holding out against Auckland Council attempts to buy him out of his business. Mr Callaghan has been running a men's hairdressers in New Lynn's Totara Ave for the past 25 years. The council will now pay for him to relocate his barber's shop to nearby Delta Ave. Mr Callaghan is happy to be able to put the matter behind him.
