Yingli Tower in Chongqing

Yingli Tower is a 285 metre tall 60 storey office skyscraper that has gone through numerous design changes up until its present reincarnation.

Drawing on the American tradition of articulated setbacks in skyscraper design, these are used to break up what would otherwise be sheer vertical shaft for the main body. Touches of art-deco are featured in the chiseled corners of the base and in the centre of the main shaft of the tower, further setbacks similar to the Empire State Building that help the form taper as it rises.

Adding a modern twist, each of the outer setbacks on the corners are curved outwards forming points and it's this that the architect then draws on for the crown of the building, moving inwards to a single pinnacle creating a diamondesque pattern along the way. The attached retail podium has a roof curving inwards from the street towards the tower in the same manner.

Although originally supposed to be completed in 2009 ground work has just gotten underway on the tower. Contractors are currently on site and busy beavering away making a very big hole for the foundations of the building to go in.
