The V Building is the approved residential phase of the wider Arena Central redevelopment, on the site of the disused ATV television studios. The tower will be located on the site of an underground car park, adjacent to the 100m tall Alpha Tower.
The tower was unveiled at the 2007 MIPIM show in Cannes, France. A detailed planning application was submitted in June 2007, and approved several months later.
The location has been subject to previous plans for towers. The first was in the 1960s and was to be the site of Alpha Tower's sister tower; Beta Tower. However, financial issues resulted in Beta Tower being removed from the masterplan. In 1997, plans were put forward for the constructed of a 245m tall residential and office tower designed by HOK, however, despite receiving the support of Birmingham City Council, the Secretary of State ruled that it was too tall for a regional city and rejected it.
Nevertheless, the council permitted any structure on the site to be upto 175m tall, without further requiring permission from Birmingham International Airport.
The 150m V Building is substantially shorter than the previous proposal, due to the owners of Crowne Plaza hotel (behind the proposed site) turning down an offer of a new hotel within the tower. The proposed tower is estimated to cost £150 million if completed and will feature 703 luxury apartments, 60 of which will be serviced. Facilities available to residents will include a hotel-style entrance lobby, underground car park and a library.
Construction was due to start in 2009 with an estimated completion date of 2013, however, Dandara have struggled with being able to obtain funding and have placed it on hold indefinitely.
